Decyclomedia Foundation:Decyclomedia Incubator/InferShit/Fandom (website)
Fandom (formerly known as Wikicities before 2007 and later Wikia) is a wiki hosting service which hosts wikis mainly on entertainment topics (i.e. video games, TV series, movies, entertainers, etc.). Originally a wiki service based in Sweden, with expansion into the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, South Africa, and elsewhere.
Fandom was founded in June 2003 by Sandeep Thakur, which had been operating under the name Wikicities prior to February 4, 2007. On May 8, 2007, Wikia was acquired by Paul Buchheit (founder of WordPress), Nick Denton (founder of Gawker Media), Jon Storkey (co-founder of Virgt, the digital strategy firm behind Wikia), and Chris McDonald (co-founder of DeviantArt) in a deal that included Wikia. Fans soon worried that Wikia would change the site to a business model driven by advertising, leaving Wikia staff to use the funds to help develop more traffic-drawing sites, including MySpace and Facebook. After this, the site was reverted to Wikia.
In 2009, Wikia acquired Allbritton Fandom, the FanMedia Network, and Actio, a publishing site for podcasts and media production. It was soon renamed to Wikia Media, Inc.
On July 11, 2010, Wikia launched FandomCentral.
On November 18, 2010, Wikia sold Wikia Entertainment, the parent company of Wikia Fandom and Wikia Television, to Universal McCann for an undisclosed sum. A representative from Wikia confirmed that the deal did not include Wikia Media.
